Waterworks Environmental Educational Center is a wonderful facility to learn about the former water treatment facility and the natural environment of our area. There is a gopher tortoise enclosure that had 4 in total I believe. A short hiking trail is available for a brief walk. You will find a small picnic area where the volunteers have lunch or host presentations. Schools use this location for a field trip. On a field trip that I attended, kids plated wild flower seeds for a butterfly garden the workers were putting together. I haven't been back to see how it turned out. The hours are odd and they offer a community garden if you wish to have a plot of your own.

What a hidden gem! Historic building, organic garden, nature trail and interesting environmental displays. They host school groups during the week and have public hours too. I just wish it was open to the public longer but it's staffed by volunteers who do a great job.
