My mom got us mixed up with the ICA when I was a young kid in the late seventies. The ICA had houses throughout the US and the world, and we were going to move to the Pace House in Mississippi, but that plan was derailed, much to my relief. We ended up at the Dallas House instead. It was weird going from an upper-middle class lifestyle to living in the Dallas House, which was in a sketchy neighborhood on Sycamore Street, off of Live Oak Street in Dallas, across the street from Minyard's super market. Basically, the ICA would buy an old apartment building, and all of the members would live in it. Meals were communal, at least in theory, and the adults were always having meetings about Lord knows what do-gooder nonsense they were up to. Didn't seem like they ever did anything but meet. Every morning we had "daily office," which was some sort of half-assed religious proceeding that involved banging a little gong at some point. Most of the families had kids that were about my age, and there were four teenagers whose families sent them to live somewhere else, I guess to broaden their perspective, sort of like the Mormans do. I remember their names: Ted, Bob, David and Therese. Ted had an awesome stereo and would crank Boston and Led Zeppelin, and I'd get to hang, if I was lucky. I was a huge KISS fan at the time. If I recall correctly, Ted didn't dig KISS too much and did not approve. I remember David's telling about his new "I Robot" record that he really liked, which I later realized was by the Alan Parsons Project. I'm big fan of Boston and Alan Parsons today, so I suppose I have them to thank. I remember that the teenagers all got jobs at McDonalds, and their manager was a black guy named Art. The head of the Dallas House was this fellow named Jeff Roper who drove a small, brown Toyota Corolla. The teenagers all called him "doper" instead of Roper, and, cleverly, his wife (Francis?) put a popular bumper sticker on their door that read, "I'm a Roper, not a Doper." It had an image of a cowboy riding a bucking bronco on it, and you'd see that bumper sticker on pickups everywhere at the time. Overall, the people were pretty normal, and, looking back, I figure that adults were just a bunch of uber liberal folks who were trying to find their ways in this organization that, best I can tell, had sort of communistic leanings. I didn't care for it, but I have a lot of very vivid memories of my time there, even though we were only there for about 6 months. I see that the ICA has re-cast itself as an environmental advocacy group, which seems about right.

Probably the worst customer service I have experienced. I ordered a sticky wall - 1/2 size - for nearly the same price as a full sized. I needed one fairly urgently for a series of facilitations I was conducting, as my previous one had been ruined when I accidentally used the wrong spray. Two and a half months later, I have made 6 phone calls, been transferred to leave a message and NEVER had even one return call. Twice I have been told by the person answering the phone that they would personally make sure my order was shipped. I have now asked for a full refund. I am very sorry that this organization is so poorly run that they can't even ship a product - although they had no problem processing the payment. I won't use them again. Fortunately, there are other suppliers. I ordered and received a sticky wall in 1 week from Partners in Participation.

In 2019 this facility was caught illegally dumping asbestos into the environment. I know because I called the EPA and followed up with the inspector. The engineering staff actually thought it was funny and claimed this was common practice for 20 years. The building is crumbling inside and out and filled with mold in many of the rental rooms and commercial spaces. No security or cameras to speak of and violent homeless disappear into the stairwells regularly. IF YOU HAVE EVER RENTED A ROOM HERE, LIVED OR WORKED HERE, please see a doctor you have been exposed to a toxic environment caused by decades of neglect.

This organization does a lot of wonderful things for the community. My favorite components are the sustainability activities such as operating the Chicago Sustainability Leaders Network and organizing community events like the uptown garden walk. The people are particularly fantastic.

I love going to workshops here. The place has a real charm. Alice makes incredible, healthy food for us. A great place!

If you get the chance to visit do it! It is a super cool location on the north side. It is a eco friendly building and is worth learning about the work they do.
