Not the most reliable system and not the best customer support

After 9 months of having a GAF Energy solar roof this has been my experience thus far:

- The initial installation resulted in a non-functional system. It took about 5-7 visits before they were able to get my system fully up and running
- It generated energy close to their proposal for a month or so and then production lowered
- Customer support took a while before they sent a crew over to troubleshoot and do some repairs.
- The system is back up but is still underperforming and I'm still in communication with GAF to get it resolved
- I'm hoping things are better for new installations as they learn more about their technology

GAF was a very professional company to work with. They completed our project in the time projected and were good on their word for every job and task that needed to be done. Customer service was fantastic. We have yet to receive our first energy bill, so I will be updating this post when we get an good idea of our roof's solar generation.

Update on my GAF solar roof….I experienced issues with my GAF solar roof almost immediately. I’d strongly recommend going with a traditional roof and separate solar panels instead. My entire roof had to be replaced, and I didn’t even have the GAF solar roof for a full two years. It was shut down three times before it needed complete replacement.

I wrote a review for DaBella who worked with GAF for the solar tiles on our home so GAF gets one too. We were supposed to have our roof done in February. It didn’t happen until June. Months of them saying it was the city and the city saying it was them. Too many people changing hands with the project. Roofers didn’t speak English which would have been fine except Cassy was a terrible middle person. We were told they would clean up as they went and they did a terrible job. Cassy made me send pics of the nails and debris left all over the place when it was evident what needed cleaned up. The back and forth coordination was unreal. Thankfully we work from home but it was so difficult to do so with the constant last min cancels for this that and the other. If DeBella is going to do business with GAF and subcontractors they need to be the one communicating or they need to not do business with these people. I did speak to Skylar from GAF who was also having difficulty getting accurate info from the crew working at our home. The guy who came out to do the electrical part of the solar was great. The rest was such a mess.

We had to wait several months for our installation, but the wait was worth it. Precision Roofcrafters in Houston did a beautiful job of installing the shingles, as did the GAF electricians who added the inverter and connected our system to the grid. The entire installation and connection process went smoothly. My wife and I are grateful for the fine work of those skilled tradesmen. Additionally, we had excellent communication with Veronica and Rachel, our GAF project coordinators.

So far, power production on a sunny, cloudless day is a little less than the rated peak power, as quoted in the initial proposal, but I'm hoping that will improve as the Earth gets closer to the sun in the Spring and Summer seasons. (I'm writing this review in Winter.)

Here's my final comment for prospective customers: You should consider this system as a way to lower your energy costs over the long term. DO NOT THINK OF IT AS A BACKUP IN THE EVENT OF A POWER OUTAGE. When the grid goes down, the power in your house goes down with it. Why? Because -- even if the sun is shining and the roof is putting out power -- the inverter will shut down to prevent electricity from spilling out onto the grid. Reason: an energized line might shock a repair technician who expects the line to be dead.

If you want power after a hurricane (for example), you'd better have a battery included in the proposal from your roofing contractor.

Anyway, good luck with your product evaluations! We are happy with our purchase of a GAF solar roof.

I would strongly advise not giving your business to this company. You will not be valued as a client. The level of customer service I have received is the worst I have ever experienced. The wait time to have your project started will likely be close to a years time. There will be no communication or answers to your questions, GAF subs out work to lackluster contractors who don’t complete installations up to code and were thrives who attempted to intimidate me over the phone. Working with GAF will cause undue stress. I would greatly suggest working with a competent non negligent company. It’s really unfortunate because their product could be a nice alternative to regular panels if the company wasn’t like a plague.

We're renovating our Florida home and looking to install a PV solution to cover our power usage. After researching various options, we found the GAF Solar Shingle solution to be the most promising. We reached out to a roofing company recommended by GAF and things quickly took a turn for the worse. Despite being told about the benefits of the technology, we never received a concrete offer. When we followed up, we were told we'd have a call with a GAF Energy representative, but they never showed up. After weeks of no progress, we reached out to GAF for another contact, only to be connected with the same roofer. We tried finding other roofers on the website, but none of them had experience with the solar roof product. In the end, we switched to Tesla, who provided a compelling offer within hours.
