My furnace was not working. Blower worked, no heat. Called Witt the morning of 2/1. The technician came out that afternoon. He said the limit switch was bad. When he restarted the furnace he said the carbon monoxide level in the supply air jumped up to 16 ppm and shut it down immediately. He thought the cause was a crack in the heat exchanger and with no further examination, recommended installing a new one.. Service call charge $267.00
Next morning the scheduler called. The price would be $2700 to install the exchanger (the exchanger itself was under warranty) and did I want them to come that day to install?
I said no. First, the16 ppm CO level is not of great concern. Second before I spend $2700 I want to know if I really need to spend it. I called another local HVAC company. Qwner himself came out, tuned up everything and said the furnace was good to go. He questioned where the CO readings were taken.
Witt was obviously wrong on recommending that I spend $2700 without thoroughly diagnosing the problem.
